However, the past few weeks have provided a bevvy of excellent teases for us. Character names for both Alice Eve and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Cocky and handsome, self-conscious and guilt-ridden – he’s the most relatable character in there and it looks as though his mistakes (as laid out by a Pike voiceover) will be the primary catalyst of the film.

Also the new trailer has a shot of a KLINGON BIRD OF PREY!

Now if you were lucky and you saw over the weekend in IMAX you may have managed to catch a fantastic 9-minute preview of the film. *twitch* It’s worth it so see Simon Pegg’s Scotty so panicky. It seemed a little silly to me to put Spock in supposedly mortal peril so early in the movie when the audience knows he still has to make it through the next couple of hours.

To appease the spoiler gods I won’t go too in depth but there were a couple of things to note. Maybe the character is called “John” for a time in the film, but if that’s not an alias then slap me down and call me a Ferengi. So in my brain, I imagined the whole Volcano-sequence to be the end of a TOS episode.

Avoid below if you want to know nothing about anything because details will be used. The beginning served as an introduction to “John Harrison.” He appears for only a moment, with a look of sympathy in his eye, explaining he can help save a dying little girl (the daughter of Noel Clarke’s character: go Mickey Smith! Now that we know Alice Eve is playing Carol Marcus, I truly madly deeply believe that Cumberbatch will be Khan. This timeline is different – who’s to say that this is any less possible than, oh I don’t know, blowing Vulcan into smithereens, taking out Amanda Grayson, and letting Spock Prime wander around anonomously. This is just over a year after the events of the first movie.

While it won’t be released in theaters for another five months, STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS director, J. Abrams recently discussed the film, the 9-minute IMAX preview, 3-D, and the film’s villain Benedict Cumberbatch with Collider.

On the 9-minute preview that was shown prior to I got some anecdotal response about it.It wasn’t like there was a target that I was aiming at and I wanted to hit a certain mark. It’s a tall order, coming into that movie, because the crew of the Enterprise – that cast – is so damn good and they’re wonderful to work with and they’re all good hearts.I don’t know how I could quantify what the reaction was. There’s no focus group or ratings or box office for what the response was to either the trailer or the preview. So, to come into that group, as he did, as Alice Eve did and as Peter Weller did, and be one of the family was something that I was doubtful could happen. I not only love him in the movie, but I love him, as a human being. I can’t wait for people to see the movie and experience what he’s done. What I’m still grappling with and learning how to do is to be looking and thinking cinematically, having come from television. But, I will say that I’m very happy about how that sequence works in the movie. A lot of that is about keeping all that stuff in frame and understanding composition. There were things I wish I had done on the first movie, that I got a chance to do this time. There were shots I wished I’d gotten, that I never got a chance to get, so it was fun to get that chance this time.
