Based on the Eight Essential Elements of Positive Youth Development, 4-H helps young people learn life skills under the guidance of trained, screened volunteers in non-formal educational settings such as clubs, camps and afterschool programs.These Essential Elements can also be viewed as the Five “C’s” – Competence, Confidence, Connection, Character and Caring.
The UMass Extension 4-H Youth Development program was in full gear June 26-28 as they engaged 59 students from across the state in active hands-on learning on the campus at UMass Amherst.
Where can you snack on a fried Oreo, then climb into a seat and be shaken and spun around for a good five to 10 minutes before feeding a goat? In New Jersey, fairs are beginning to gear up for the summer season.
Whether you appreciate the animals and agriculture at a traditional 4-H fair, like to gnaw away at a turkey leg while taking in a jousting show or prefer carnival rides and games of chance, the state is home to fairs large and small.
